Crocetta, southwest of the centre, is regarded as one of Turin's most refined residential districts. In the early 20th century, numerous Art Nouveau and Liberty-style villas were built here along quiet, tree-lined avenues. The district feels dignified and affluent, with smart shops, patisseries and a relaxed, everyday atmosphere well away from the main tourist crowds.
The Crocetta market
Crocetta is famous for its namesake open-air market, known especially for fashion and fabrics, which draws bargain-hunters from across the city. If you want to see the polished everyday life of Turin's middle and upper classes, this is the place.
Art and location
On the northern edge of the district stands the GAM, Turin's gallery of modern art. Crocetta is well connected to the centre and to Porta Nuova station by metro, making it a quieter, residential base for visitors who prefer something a little more refined.
